Organized baseball was gathering a foothold in American life during the Civil War years. Northern towns had the peace, prosperity, and leisure time to establish simple baseball leagues. This is an 1864 photograph of the Brooklyn Atlantics, a baseball team from Brooklyn, New York. The Atlantics had their team photographs mounted on palm-sized pieces of cardboard. The photographs were passed around like modern-dav baseball cards.
Baseball Legend Abner Doubleday Fights at Fort Sumter According to American legend, Abner Doubleday (1819-1893) was the inventor of the sport of baseball. As a nineteen-year-old cadet at the West Point Military Academy in New York in 1839, Doubleday allegedly devised the basic rules of the game. His rules included use of a diamond-shaped field and nine-player teams. But while generations of Americans have grown up believing that Doubleday invented baseball in 1839, historians believe that he did not really do so. In fact, it has been proven that a children's game similar to baseball existed long before Doubleday attended West Point. But even though Abner Doubleday did not really invent baseball, he is still a notable figure in American history. After all, Doubleday was second in command at Fort Sumter when it came under attack from Confederate forces on April 12, 1861. As chief lieutenant for Major Robert Anderson (1805-1871), Doubleday took a leading role in defending the fort from...
Union soldiers usually received adequate amounts of food. Their diet consisted mainly of meat, coffee, and bread, although fresh fruits and vegetables were sometimes available. Most soldiers did not like the thin, cracker-like bread they received, which they called hardtack. They usually soaked it in water or coffee to soften it up before eating it. After dinner and the evening inspection, the soldiers usually relaxed by singing songs, writing letters to their families, and playing games, including an early version of baseball. This routine tended to change for a few days every other month, when the soldiers received their pay. Some of them used their money for gambling, buying alcohol, or visiting prostitutes.

This was a period that also saw the professionalization of American life. Physicians, engineers, and architects, among others, for the first time formed themselves into professional societies to set standards and protect their interests. Sportsmen, beginning with baseball players, divided themselves into professional and amateur ranks.
The ski-type field cap continued in used throughout the Civil War but was gradually replaced by other types. Prominent during 1946-48 was the US summer tropical peaked service cap in light khaki, either stiffened or with its stiffening removed to make it 'crushable'. This cap was worn in summer and winter alike, but was often adapted for cold weather. These improvised winter hats were produced by sewing woollen ear flaps to the band, worn tied up above the crown in warmer weather. Although described as being of US origin, many of these peaked caps may have been copies manufactured in Chinese factories. Other types of US surplus caps were also worn, including the soft fatigue cap and several types of baseball caps.
