John Clem ran away from his Ohio home to join the army at age nine.
He had turned ten by the time he served at the Battle of Shiloh. The next year, in September, 1863, at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia, Clem shot a Southern officer who tried to force him to surrender. This won him even more celebrity. Years after the war, General Grant made him a lieutenant in the U.S. Army. John Clem retired as a major general in 1916.
