H In the Union army, only officers were trusted with the signal code. They would call out the number combinations to Signal Corp sergeants, who would actually move the flag. Many sergeants learned the code through continued use. The Confederates, on the other hand, taught all of their Signal Corps personnel the code.
H Signal flag stations were used primarily for two purposes: as message centers, and as lookout posts.
H Signal flags were used in three different sizes: the smallest signal flags were 2 feet by 2 feet square, with an 8-inch center square. The next size flags were 4 by 4 feet, with a 16-inch square in the middle, and the largest signal flags were 6 feet square with a 2-foot square in the center.
