American Civil War Marines 186165

Marine Civil War

RON FIELD was born in Hertford, England, in 1943 and was educated in Cheltenham where he gained a Bachelor of Education (Hons) degree. He is presently Head of History at the Cotswold School in Bourton-on-the-Water. He was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship in 1982 and taught history at Piedmont High School in California from 1982-83 as part of the UK US Teacher Exchange Program.

About the Editor and Contributors

Nytroe received her doctorate in history from Boston College. She has written articles on Catholic women and the U.S. Sanitary Commission for Women in the American Civil War (ABC-CLIO, 2008). Her scholarship focuses on American religious history and the 19th-century United States.

The Spanish Civil War in perspective

It was for this reason that Hugh Thomas's monumental TheSpanish Civil War, published in 1961, was such an important book. For the first time, a comprehensive account of what actually happened during the war existed, and although the Franco regime banned it, copies circulated widely in Spain. Forty years of subsequent scholarship have enormously enlarged our knowledge not just of the military course of the war, but more particularly of the politics, culture, economy and daily experience of the 24 million Spaniards whose fate it was to endure the conflict. The passage of time has not made the choices they faced seem any easier, or their courage any less remarkable.

A history teacher for over 30 years, Ron is presently Head of History at the Cotswold School in Bourton-on-the-Water, UK. He was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship in 1982 and taught at Piedmont High School in California during 1982-83. He has traveled extensively in the US, conducting research at numerous libraries, archives and museums, and has written several books on 19th-century American history. He was elected a Fellow of the Company of Military Historians, based in Washington, DC, in 2005. This is his second book for Osprey's Fortress series.

Barlow Francis Channing 183496

In the defense of Cemetery Ridge on the first day of Cettysburg (1 July 1863) Barlow was wounded and left for dead on the field, with his arms and legs temporarily paralyzed. Years after the war the Confederate Gen. John B.Gordon described how he ran across a wounded Union officer after the first day's fighting. Quickly dismounting and lifting his head, I gave him water from my canteen, asking his name and the character of his wounds. He was Major General Francis C.Barlow, of New York, and of Howard's corps. In fact, however, modern scholarship has proved that Gordon was not in the same part of the field as Barlow, and this story was not based in fact.

Vann Woodward

Over twenty years in the making, The Oxford History of the United States has been conceived under the general editorship of one of the leading American historians of our time, C. Vann Woodward, to represent and summarize the scholarship of this generation. This magnificent series will consist of ten chronological volumes, each of which will encompass the social, political, economic, cultural, diplomatic, and military history of a particular period in a readable and coherent narrative framework. In addition, a volume will be devoted exclusively to the history of American diplomacy. As with the celebrated Oxford History of England, each work has been commissioned from a leading scholar in his period or field, and each will stand as the basic one-volume history of its kind.

Period Reenactment

Another important aspect of the activities of the re-enactment societies is historical research. From their roots in Peter Young's scholarship, the Knot and the ECWS have contributed greatly to serious enquiry into aspects of the period not suitable or fashionable for general academic study. Practical experiment and documentary research have combined to increase our understanding of subjects as varied as 17th century dyestuffs, and cooking, as well as clothing design and procurement, weapons and tactics. Valuable specialist publishing has been undertaken by society members and professional historians such as Dr.David Chandler of the RMA Sandhurst, and the New Model Army authority Barry Denton, contribute their strength in research. The Knot is constantly asked for advice, at every level, on all aspects of the period.
