Army Terms

Although the strength of the army units varied widely, the following is a general guide to the terms used in the atlas:

Army: Any force operating in a theater. The strength of any army could vary from 10,000 to over 100,000

Corps: Composed of two or three divisions, a corps' strength varied from between 15,000 and 20,000

Division: Usually composed of two or three brigades amounting to 5,000 men

Brigade: Composed of two or more regiments and totaling between 1,200 and 3,000 men

Regiment: Composed of 10 companies of 50-100 men each
