The Division crossed the Potomac on June 18. Responding to orders from Corps Headquarters, on June 29 it began marching eastward toward Gettysburg in order to unite with the balance of the Corps. On July 1 it endured a fatiguing march of close to 25 miles along the Chambersburg Pike to arrive at Gettysburg before darkness fell. Ewell
