The Big Sandy River is the dividing line between West Virginia (formerly part of Virginia) and Kentucky.

Fawn. Union. Steamer, 25 tons. Built in 1862 at Pittsburgh, Pa. Was captured and burned by Lt. Col. A. Witcher and the 34th Va. Cavalry Battalion on November 5, 1864, in Buffalo Shoals, Big Sandy River. (OR, 43:1:650-51; MSV, 72, 260.)

Fawn. Union. Stern-wheel steamer, 36 tons. Built in 1863 at Marietta, Ohio. Was burned on November 11, 1864, in the Big Sandy River. Could be same vessel as the one cited in the preceding entry. (MSV, 72, 260.)

R. H. Barnum (Barnum). Union. Stern-wheel steamer, 30 tons. Built in 1862 at Warren, Ohio. Was captured and burned by Lt. Col. A. Witcher and the 34th Va. Cavalry Battalion on November 5, 1864, in Buffalo Shoals near Louisa, Ky. (OR, 43:1:650-51; MSV, 180, 292.)
